From 2022 on, we will again be running our three-day, interactive (live, online) introductory, hands-on course “Editorial AI” – A practical introduction in Machine learning for journalists. (For newsroom journalists and/or freelancers!)
Who is this workshop for?
Do you ever experience some of these situations and/or feelings during your work:
- We’ll never be able to read all of these documents.
- What’s unique about this text compared to all the rest?
- My eyes sting from searching these images for the same thing.
- We need to find more records like these in a huge pile of data.
- I could use a heads-up before this happens again.
If you do, applying machine learning to your job might be an interesting option. And nowadays that is no longer expensive, too far-fetched or a complex affair.
This course is for every journalist and professional in media who is curious to discover what she/he can do with artificial intelligence for journalistic tasks.
No programming experience or advanced math skills required.
What are you going to do & learn?
Whether it concerns spotting signs of corruption in documents, recognizing distribution centres in Europe based on satellite imagery, or analyzing sentiments in comments on thousands of articles; Through this course, you will find out how you can do this type of work faster using readily available tools and systems.
- You will build and train a machine learning model for image and/or text classification yourself, using free software and tools from the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), Microsoft and Google.
- You learn to determine which opportunities machine learning offers and which dangers it presents; for journalism, for your organisation and within your editorial team and/or your own activities.
- You will receive a step-by-step guide to apply machine learning in your work.
- You will learn to use basic theory, common terminology and vocabulary when it comes to artificial intelligence -AI- and in particular machine learning, to better understand and analyze existing applications, and for holding algorithms to account.
- You will be experimenting with ready-to-use AI-powered tools such as Pinpoint, Datashare and Descript.
By attending this course you immediately create a toolbox for machine learning and form an archive of knowledge for further self-study.
